Greencoat Wax Free Boxes

The information below is from 2016. Interstate Container was acquired by DS Smith in 2017. Greencoat® is licensed by INDEVCO to DS Smith for use in the United States.

Annually, approximately 1.47 million tons of wax boxes end up in landfills, with retail and restaurant end users paying $50 million in disposal fees. In 2016, Interstate Container increased production of Greencoat boxes by over 35% to 53,000 tons. When recycled at the U.S. rate, this equates to energy savings of 718,000 million BTUs, as well as reduction of GHG emissions by 40,500 metric tons of carbon equivalent (MTCE) and 148,700 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO2E).

As a sustainable raw material, the shift to Greencoat saves energy, increases recycling, and reduces GHG caused by wax landfilling and burning, corresponding to UN SDG12 (Target 12.5).

Greencoat for the U.S. Poultry Industry

A critical step poultry processors take is the commitment to progressive elimination of wax boxes and transition to Greencoat. Interstate Container supplies Greencoat® to 16 of the U.S.’s 34 integrated poultry companies, including 4 of the top 10 processors.

Greencoat for the U.S. Fresh Produce Industry

Initially, the fresh produce industry resisted transitioning from waxed boxes due to quality, strength, and performance concerns. Accordingly, Interstate Container concentrated on developing a quality product that did not skid or open, in order to gain traction with growers and packers in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic.
As part of Global Green USA’s awareness program, Interstate Container has engaged with Coalition for Resource Recovery (CORR) partners in initial pilot projects to demonstrate the viability of wax replacement boxes for the fresh produce industry.
